Think back to the time of steam engines, and one has arrived from the Midlands at St Pancras with a large thirst! You need a lot of water quickly to fill the tender of the engine, much more than you could get from a hose or even the mains water.
The solution is a waterpoint which has a large tank full of water with a large pipe feeding the water columns at the ends of the platforms. It is a bit like your toilet cistern, when you flush you want a good flow of water to cleanse your toilet and then is slowly fills from the mains ready for the next time.
Inside the iron tank on the roof was a large ballcock with a float which cut off the incoming water when the tank was full - just like your toilet.
Now situated next to Camley Street Natural Park, the structure was moved from the end of St Pancras station to make room for the High Speed rail link. It was transported in sections from its original location closer to the old station and reassembled to provide views over the Kings Cross lands, towards the British Library and, of course, of St Pancras station.
About 25 of us had an interesting tour to learn about the history of the Waterpoint, its move and the area it sits in.
