Colchester History Visit

The most recent trip of the ad hoc group was to Colchester on 21 April to learn about some of the history of this interesting city. It was blessed by fine weather, informative guides and good company.

With our morning guide, we visited many historical sites including the Roman walls, gates and theatre foundations, the Dutch quarter, St Bostolph’s priory and several sites connected to the 1648 siege of Colchester.

After well-deserved refreshments at Weatherspoon’s, we walked through St John’s abbey gatehouse before reaching the only Roman Circus in the UK.

The circus was used for chariot racing but most of its stonework was recycled into later buildings. Our guide showed us a replica of the starting blocks and seating, the route of the circus, model of the Roman town and various artefacts including a replica of a chariot made for a Time Team programme on the circus.

A full, interesting day that left us with a better appreciation of the history of Colchester, the first capital of Britain.

Many thanks to John and Elizabeth for organising this trip.
