Rev Henry Duncan Savings Bank

7th January 2027

When you are the son of a Minister then if trade does not suit you, entering the Ministry was always a good option (faith optional!).

Henry was keen that people should know the truth and established a local paper since he did not think the other sources of information were complete or honest.

He was very concerned about the people in his parish who were honest, industrious trades people who would be paid once a year in arrears. They needed to budget and save to be able to survive the subsequent year but the other banks expected you to maintain a deposit of at least £10, so he established his own savings bank. He wrote out the principles in a booklet which became the template for many trustee savings banks around the world with a much lower entry threshold in terms of deposits.

We will be having a talk on the life of Henry, the founding of two newspapers, the savings bank and the great "Disruption". We will meet in the upstairs room at Eagle Hall, with refreshments provided, at 2pm.

Cost - £5.30
